ALPACA (CRIA)
MILK REPLACER
Wombaroo Alpaca Milk Replacer is a highly digestible,
easily prepared milk substitute formulated to closely resemble the
nutrient composition of alpaca milk. Data for alpaca milk is incomplete
and milk composition values for the llama have been included in the
formulation of Wombaroo.
HAND-REARING: Success in hand-rearing cria
greatly improves if they receive colostrum at birth.
Impact Colostrum Replacer is
available for cria that did not get colostrum from the dam. A healthy cria
should stand and begin nursing within 1 hour of birth. New born cria
should be kept in a clean, draught-free environment. Warm Wombaroo to
about 35° C. Feed from a bottle with teat every 2 hours for the
first 4 days, reducing this to every 4 hours by the end of the first
week. Continue feeding every 4 hours for the second week. During the
third week reduce feeding to 6 hourly intervals. To make feeding easier
encourage cria to lap milk from a small bucket. Avoid dehydration during
periods of hot weather by giving cria a drink of pre-boiled water between
feeds. Animals drink water when thirsty so always have drinking water
available.
GROWTH: Depending upon its sex, a cria should
weigh from 6 and 9kg at birth and grow at a rate of 200 to 300g per day.
Where possible, weigh cria regularly to verify weight gains and to
determine the volume of milk to feed. Overfeeding milk can cause diarrhoea,
so feed the suggested volumes in our tables.
WEANING: Mother reared cria are usually weaned
at six to nine months of age. In most cases it would be impractical to
hand-rear a cria for this time, so many owners will want to begin weaning
as soon as possible. We would advise feeding milk for at least three
months and this would require about 75 litres of Wombaroo. To entice cria
to eat solids, offer small portions of pelleted food soaked in Wombaroo.
Once they start to eat solid food continue to increase the solids and
reduce the milk in their diet until they are fully weaned.
Consult your veterinarian for more advice.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE: Wombaroo is a
powder and is available in pack sizes of 1kg, 5kg, 10kg and 20kg. If
unopened the powder remained stable for up to 18 months if stored below 30° C. and protected from moisture.
To make one litre of milk add 170g of powder to 400ml
of warm pre-boiled water and mixed into a paste. Then make up to one litre
with warm pre-boiled water and mix thoroughly. Milk can be mixed using an
electric whisk. Prepared milk can be stored for 24 hours if refrigerated,
or up to two weeks if frozen. Milk that has been thawed should be well
mixed before use and not refrozen.
ECONOMY: Wombaroo not only provides the best
nutrition for your cria, it is also inexpensive to use. Based on
recommended retail price it would only cost about $2.50 per day to rear a
cria.
